1923
W. C. Worsley, Sr. opened his first service station in 1923. He was originally from Pitt County but moved to Wallace, North Carolina after meeting and marrying a school teacher from the Wallace area. Together the couple would have five children.
1941
In 1941 W.C. Worsley Sr. became a Jobber for American (Which today is known as Amoco) it is during this year that Worsley Oil Company was founded and incorporated.
1946
In 1946 his oldest son W. Cecil Worsley, Jr. opened an oil company in Burgaw. He built this location which consisted of a warehouse and service station up to be a successful operation and then opened another oil company in Elizabethtown with an office, warehouse and service station.
1947
In 1947 when Donald Worsley got out of the National Guard he became manager of the Elizabethtown location.
1954
In 1954 W.C. Worsley, Sr. retired and W. Cecil Worsley, Jr. became the President of Worsley Oil Company. In that same year Worsley Oil Company went into the propane business.
1956
In 1956 W. Cecil Worsley, Jr. was given the opportunity to become a Jobber with Exxon. He built a separate office and warehouse in Wallace and incorporated the business as Twin Petroleum (named after his twin brothers David and George Worsley) David Worsley managed this location for the company.
1960
In 1960 W. C. Worsley, Sr. passed away leaving his son’s to carry on the family business.
1968
1968 the company started expanding by purchasing Seaboard Petroleum located in Conway, South Carolina. The Company continued on a buying spree for the next twenty years ending up with twelve oil companies in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.
1974
In 1974 a business decision was made to covert the existing service stations over to convenience stores. A contest was developed to come up with a new name for these stores in the North and South Carolina area. Bill Hussey who was an employee at the time came up with the names “Scotties”, “Little Scotch” or “Scotchman”. “Scotchman Stores” was chosen as the new name for the chain of convenience stores in the Carolina’s. The first store that was converted from a service station to a convenience store was located in Maple Hill, North Carolina. This store is still in operation today.
1980
In 1980 Worsley Companies opened an office in Wilmington, North Carolina on New Centre Drive. This office served as a corporate office handling all the accounting needs for the Scotchman Stores.
1983
In 1983 Worsley Companies built a new home office headquarters located off Cardinal Drive in Wilmington, North Carolina.
1985
In 1985 Worsley Companies purchased their first Truck Stop in South Carolina known as the Dixie Boy Truck Stop. They continue expanding opening two truck stops in Florida and two in North Carolina.
1994
In 1994 W. Cecil Worsley, III became President / CEO of Worsley Companies and W. Cecil Worsley, Jr. was named Chairman of the Board.
1995
In 1995 a corporate business decision was made to concentrate the company’s business efforts solely in the Carolina’s. This meant concentrating on the core business which was Scotchman Stores, the two Truck Stops, a Transport Company and the Wholesale business. Therefore the business interests in Tennessee and Florida were sold.
1996
The Derrick Truck Stop located in Salisbury, NC was recognized in a nationwide survey of truck stops by the National Truckers Association for having the “Best Waitresses” as well as achieving the second highest award for “Best Food”.
2002
North Carolina Association of Convenience Stores presented the 2002 L. W. Locke “Retailer of the Year Award” to Worsley Companies, Incorporated. This award recognizes a member or company for Excellence in Community Service.
2003
The Derrick Tuck Stop was also highlighted by the Travel Network on Cable Television as one of the “Top 10 Truck Stops in the Country” noting that it is uniquely known for having its very own church building on site which employs a full time Pastor.
2004
In June of 2004 the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores presented Mrs. Bernice Spann of Young’s Food Store # 607 located on East Liberty Street in Sumter, South Carolina the “Store Manager of the Year Award”.
2004
Also in 2004 Springer Eubanks Oil Company was purchased adding additional convenience stores along with a Wholesale Lube and Home Heating Division to our company.
2006
Worsley Companies Inc. has been awarded the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores (SCACS) 2006 Retailer of the Year Award. This award, presented at the annual convention of SCACS on July 16th in Hilton Head Island, honors a retailer for their commitment to the industry, their actions, and activities that exemplifies the value of convenience stores in the state of SC.
Today, Worsley Companies Incorporated is a successful family business which employs over 1000 employees. The company has many entities within their organization. The company operates 150 convenience stores in North and South Carolina which operate under the names of “Scotchman Stores”, “Young’s Food Stores”, “S-E Food Mart” and “Your Convenience Stores”. Worsley Companies also owns a Wholesale Division along with a Home Fueling Division plus other company interest.
